The Machakos county assembly has passed a motion to scrap the position of the Deputy speaker in the county assembly.
The motion was tabled in the assembly by nominated MCA Veronicah Mbithe who argued that the position is not anywhere in the assembly's standing orders.
Supporting the motion, majority of the MCAs noted that the assembly only allows the position of the chair of assembly committees but there is no Deputy speaker's post.
However three MCAs, Felix Ngui, Alex Kathinzi and Collins Mutyota opposed the motion citing it as a political move to remove the current Deputy Speaker Nathaniel Nganga from his position.
“We can change that name of the Deputy Speaker to read the chair of Assembly Committees, but Mr speaker my firm grounds is that this motion grounds are malice,” Kathinzi urged.
The speaker of the Machakos assembly Bernard Mungata has also announced the removal of 5 assembly committee members from different committees.
Those removed are Isaac Muinde (Budget committee chair), Rachael Nduku(Budget committee, deputy chair), Peter Nzoka, vibe Koki and Francis Matheka who were members in various committees.
