Machakos county askaris based in Yatta sub-county escaped unhurt On Wednesday morning at Kaare market in Yatta when boda boda operators pelted them with stones.

The bodaboda operators were alleged to have absconded paying their levies and decided to stone the officers after they arrived to arrest them.

The area Chief county askari Mr Bernand Rucha said the officers, who were accompanied by some county levy collectors and several police officers, escaped unhurt.

They broke the windows of the two cars that were carrying council officers and the police but the officers were able to escape narrowly without apprehending anyone.

Rucha told this writer through a phone interview that one of the suspects was arrested immediately after the incident after he carried a passenger towards the sub-county offices and he will lead the officers in arresting his accomplices as well as being prosecuted.

He added that the officers were on an operation aimed at ensuring that all boda boda operators were licensed to operate in the sub-county jurisdiction but they were welcomed with the harshness.

He said that the ugly incident will not stop the officers from seizing all unlicensed motor cyclists in the area as they have been mandated to do so by the county government.

However, one of the operators has refuted the claim saying that there is no one who evades paying the levies at their carrying point and that they will not allow anyone to harass them as the askaris as fond of asking for bribes and accusing one falsely.,
