Machakos county government has allocated Sh 9 billion to fund water projects in various parts.
According to the Water and Irrigation Executive Kioko Luka, the county government is taking all the necessary measures to curb the problem of water shortage in the county.
"Part of the money will be used to support required infrastructure for provision of water in villages throughout the county," Luka said yesterday. He added:
"We are drilling more boreholes and building dams that will be used in harvesting water. This will ensure as many people as possible are connected to water supply." Residents of this county have been forced to walk for kilometers in search of this rare commodity that has affected most parts.
Those living in towns are among the most affected with a 20-liter container costing up to Sh 30. Some of the most affected areas of the county include Mavoko, Machakos Town, Tala, Matuu and Masinga.
In Katoloni, suburb residents are compelled to wake up in the morning so that they can line up to buy water. On the other hand, Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala attributed the problem of water shortage to poor planning.
Kiala pointed out that Machakos residents continue to suffer yet the Mutua’s government has spent approximately Sh5 billion on water projects since 2013.
