Here in Kenya, we've had our share of criminals as well. We all know John Kiriamiti - the famous criminal turned million shilling selling author, who enticed Kenyans everywhere with his exploits.

ore feared included the infamous Bernard Matheri a.k.a Rasta, Wanugu a.k.a Gerald Munyeria and Wacucu a.k.a Anthony Kanari and Shimoli who was convicted for raping over 90 women and committing an unknown number of bank robberies. 

This is a trend that the current government of Machakos county seeks to curb. The county already has a smartphone app that is helping its residents access basic services, now its criminal database system is something only akin to the mission impossible and James Bond movie franchises. 

Governor Alfred Mutua publicly launched a Forensics Research Lab, in conjunction with the myriad of police cars he released upon the county. 

I got hold of a screen grab of the forensics software and I have to admit, it is impressive. It is still in the prototype stage but its function is fairly simple. 

Basically, once a criminal is arrested, he/she is taken for documentation by having their basic information entered into the system including I.D number, birth date, picture and details of crime and arrest. 

This information is stored on a central server at the Machakos county C.I.D office, which then integrates with the National Electoral Database, and warns immediately someone's ID number or name comes up on any national enquiry. 

This also helps in a manhunt for a runaway vagrant. This system will be fully operational in a few months, so criminals and law breakers in Machakos county have been warned.
