The national government affirmative action department which is under the office of the Machakos county Women Rep is set to use over Sh3 million to buy and supply sanitary towels to school girls.
Confirming this when she visited Machakos women prison on Monday, Machakos Women Rep Dr Susan Musyoka also called on women to engage in leadership.
During the visit where the women rep was accompanied by Darling beauty college students, 62 women prisoners benefited from the sanitary towels.
“We have done training programmes to encourage women to engage in leadership and also start their own businesses, that is together with youths,” Musyoka said.
Susan also revealed that the initiative has so far trained over 2000 women and youths across the county and have shown positive improvement in their businesses.
“We have already trained over 2000 youths and women across the county and they have improved their businesses, we are also training them on how they can access government loans,” Susan added.
Women in the prison have also called on leaders to address gender-based violence and protect them once they are released to go back to the society.
They also thanked the Women Rep for finding time to visit them and also the Darling College management for making their hair.
