Hundreds of farmers from Machakos County are calling upon the national and county government to come to their rescue following army worm invasion in the region.
The farmers in the area have lamented that they have suffered huge losses following the invasion of the pests.
The farmers want the two governments and other organizations to assist them in getting rid of the pests with immediate effect. They said several acres of farms have been destroyed by the pests despite their concerns.
Elizabeth Nduku, a farmer from Lukenya in Machakos County, lamented that army worms have made farming a nightmare in the region. Nduku has only been lucky to harvest her crop twice in a period of ten years.
Nimekuja huku 07, mvua ile nimpata chakula ni mvua mbili na hii ingine nalima ikifika hapa nakuaka. Sa zingine nakauka, Najaribu nashindwa. Sikulima shamba lote sababu sioni maana ya kulima” she said. Which loosely translates to: (I came here in 2007, I have only harvested crops for two season and the other seasons I grow crops but they dry. I did not plant in the entire farm because I did not see the reason of doing so)
