Athi River deputy county commissioner Geoffrey Omoding addresses the Star at his office on Tuesday, December 19, 2017.
Athi River deputy county commissioner Geoffrey Omoding has urged Machakos Government to urgently address Mavoko residents’ complaints on dilapidated roads.
Omoding said the public outcry on the roads were genuine hence needs immediate intervention.
“The public is genuine on the complaints, the county government should intervene immediately to end the stalemate between truck drivers and the residents,” said Omoding.
He spoke to the Star at his office on Tuesday.
Residents of Kamulu in Mavoko, Machakos County have barricaded most of the roads used by trucks from quarries in Muthwani ward.
They complain of the poor state of the roads having been destroyed by the heavy trucks and too much dust.
The locals protested the situation on Saturday.
They want all the roads tarmacked before they re-open them.
The trucks are currently passing through private land on which their owners tax them between Sh50 and Sh200 as revenue for each trip per lorry.
Omoding said investors were willing to partner with the Machakos Government for the roads to be done.
“It is the county government’s responsibility to tarmac the roads, the residents are remitting taxes but receiving no services in return,” said Omoding.
He said the roads were totally impassible.
“Trucks are destroying the roads, we are liaising with the county government to ensure the roads are done urgently,” said Omoding.
Omoding said affected residents should remain patient as the issue was being addressed.
“We want to address the problem immediately by grading the roads, this can be done within a week,” said Omoding.
He said tarmacking the roads was expensive and time-consuming hence could come later as a long-term solution.
Omoding said if 'murrammed' well, the roads would serve the residents and solve their problems.
He said the government was committed to ensuring locals receive necessary services.
