Machakos County Government has been urged to fix drainage systems so as to prevent flooding during the rainy season.
Traders in Tala Market of Matungulu, Machakos County have asked Governor Alfred Mutua's administration to repair and construct credible drainage systems claiming floods were already being experienced in the area.
They said transport and business had been paralyzed in the town due to the ongoing heavy rains.
"Due to the heavy rains transport and business have been paralyzed as traders count losses due to flood waters which swept away their property," Tala Market Chairperson Anna Katile said.
Katile said the county government took long to fix the town's drainage system before the onset of the rains.
She argued that if their earlier cries had been heard, then they could have not been in the situation they are in now.
“Due to the ongoing road repairs in Tala town, the drainage systems have been blocked," Katile said.
"Some months ago we gave our grievances hopping that the county government would deal with the matter, and now we are languishing in the floods," Katile added.
She gave an example of the Tala Bus Park that was filled with flood waters forcing vehicles to avoid it.
Katile said the Machakos County Government had severally promised to repair drainage systems at the park, what remains empty promises.
