Just a day after Machakos county medical officials staged a protest against consistent maltreatment by county officials including Governor Alfred Mutua, medics at Machakos Level 5 Hospital have expressed their fears concerning the deplorable state of their staff quarters and working environment.
The doctors in the hospital fear for their health and have accused the county government of failing to fulfill its obligations.
“Doctors do not wish to continue working in such conditions. The county needs to stop pushing its political agenda and focus on service provision to its people,” lower eastern secretary general Kirubi Kariuki lamented.
One visiting the sparkling and clean modernised hospital would be shocked at the contrasting image that is the staff quarters, which are directly behind the hospital.
Spilling sewer pipes in some staff houses deposit their waste into corridors of the multistory housing structures. The houses have smug filled walls, foul odors, and mountains of garbage. One may as well wonder what doctors could be doing in such environment and still advise their patients to observe cleanliness.
Kirubi also lamented that the pathetic situation of the quarters are well known to the county government but no efforts have been made in line with ensuring the safety if the doctors.
