Addressing the public in Matungulu sub-county on Thursday, Francisca Mutinda, Machako County Maendeleo ya Wanawake Chair-lady said it is not wise for politicians to wait for disasters to strike so as to go politicking in victimised areas.

“CORD leadership has developed a habit of taking advantage of disasters to push for their Okoa Kenya Initiative campaign. It is not wise for them to wait for calamities to strike for them to go politicking,” said Mutinda.

She claimed the same politicians who use national functions and disasters to campaign accuse the region's Maendeleo ya Wanawake of working closely with both the Jubilee and Machakos County Governments.

"As Maendeleo ya Wanawake leaders and members from Machakos County, we cannot be condemned for working with the ruling government. We equally work with women in grassroots and therefore know challenges which they face as women,” said Mutinda.

Mutinda said it is their constitutional right to work closely with the government for the interest of the women they represent arguing women cannot achieve development if they join opposition coalitions or groupings.

She said women from the county need to be empowered politically and socioeconomically to enable them to fully engage and participate in issues which affect them, including national politics.

“As women, we must be empowered so that we engage and participate in national politics,” said Mutinda.

Matungulu West MCA, Magdalene Ndawa said politics of opposition cannot take women anywhere claiming the politicians just push for their personal interests and do not have the interests of women at heart.

Ndawa said Kamba women will not allow politics of negativity that keep them away from ruling governments.
