Machakos town MCA Cornelius Kitheka has cautioned youths against engaging in prostitution.
The MCA says that cases of young teenagers selling their flesh have gone up in Machakos town and its environs.
Speaking at Machakos town on Tuesday, the MCA said that the situation is worrying and needs urgent measures.
“Many of our teenagers have opted to join prostitution to make ends meet,” he said.
He observed that most of the teenagers have no idea of the risks involved in prostitution. The MCA blamed the high numbers of teenagers engaging in prostitution to unemployment.
He asked the county government to urgently work on modalities that will create job opportunities for the youth.
Kitheka further urged local leaders to intervene and help address the problem. The MCA urged parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children.
He added that lack of counseling has also contributed to the rise in number of teenagers taking part in prostitution and drug abuse.
