The Machakos County Assembly will soon enact traffic laws geared towards reducing road carnage on its roads.

The Ndalani MCA Mr Stephen Muthuka said he will introduce a bill that will empower county officials to enforce traffic laws to reign in offending public service vehicle operators and members of the public flouting laws.

He said most tragic road accidents happened when overloaded matatu and buses travelling from beyond the county boundaries failed to negotiate the many corners on the section of the Garissa Road that traverses the county.

He was speaking at Mitheu market a few kilometres from the spot where an overloaded matatu crushed on a tractor two days ago and injured 10 people.

Mr Muthuka said it was evident traffic policemen stationed along the road could not end the road carnage because the fateful matatu had passed a police check a few metres from the accident scene.

He said once the law was enacted, county officials could impose stiff fines on offending drivers, conductors and members of the public who board already full matatus.

The residents have been condemning the accidents along the Garissa Road blaming it on the traffic police department.
