Machakos county has been ranked among the worst performers in development expenditure according to the Annual Implementation Report released by the office of the Controller of Budget.
Other counties ranked among the worst performers are Makueni, Embu, Taita-Taveta and Nakuru counties. The best performers are Bomet, Mombasa, Wajir,Tana River and Muranga.
Counties spent Sh13 billion on travelling and allowances in the last fiscal year. Machakos county is one of the counties that in domestic and foreign travel, spent more than the approved annual allocations together with Kwale, Murang’a, Trans Nzoia, Makueni and Turkana counties.
According to the Controller of Budget Ms Odhiambo, this is an indication of weak budgetary controls in those counties.
“The counties should, therefore, enhance budgetary controls to ensure expenditure is within the law."
