Machakos is prepared to host this year’s edition of the Council of East and Central Africa (CECAFA), county Sports Director Stephen Kilonzo has said.
According to Citizen Digital Kilonzo revealed that the county government under the leadership of Governor Alfred Mutua is in a good position to host the games amid reports that the organizers want to shift the Group A matches to Kenyatta Stadium.
On Thursday, a local daily reported that Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is likely to shift the games to Machakos from Kisumu, which has hit by protests and other challenges following the October rerun.
The tournament, which is making a comeback after two years of inactivity, is expected to attract several teams from different parts of the region. Kenya’s Harambee Stars has been put in Pool A.
The national football team is expected to lock horns with Rwanda, Zanzibar, Libya and Tanzania.
Harambee stars will be among the affected teams if FKF effects the changes as announced earlier. Kilonzo also said that there is no cause for alarm since the nation have hosted bigger tournaments before.
“We successfully hosted the tournament in 2013 and have hosted a number of high profile tournaments this year which is an indicator that we are very ready for it,” Kilonzo told Citizen Digital.
Defending champions Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Burundi and South Sudan will lock horns at the Kakamega County’s Bukhungu Stadium
