Speaking from her Machakos office on Sunday, Gakuria said the government has taken the necessary measures to boost surveillance in all learning institutions.

She said that at least two police officers will be deployed in boarding schools while police security patrols will be conducted on a 24 hour basis in all day schools.

The Commissioner further said that her office is working with all school heads and boards to ensure adequate safety measures are put in place.

“I want to assure students and teachers plus all residents of Machakos that their security is guaranteed,” she said.

Gakuria said that police will also be conducting checks on all vehicles entering the county at all entry points.

The Commissioners’ assurance came after several students at the Yatta National Youth Service were injured in a stampede following a tire burst that they mistook to be a terror attack.

According to Gakuria, the students were woken up at 1.30 am Sunday morning by the blast from a vehicle along the Thika-Garissa highway.

Students are said to have started scampering for safety as others jumped from high floors of their hostels.

She said 19 students were injured in the stamped adding that 17 have been treated and discharged while three who suffered serious head injuries are recuperating at the Machakos Level 5 hospital.
