Residents in Mjini, Serena, Eastleigh residential areas around Machakos town are at risk of getting infected with waterborne diseases as pipes supplying water for their domestic use leaked in sewages and dirty water following drainage bursts.
According to senior health officer in Machakos, Joy Mwendwa, the problem started on Monday evening, when residents started complaining that their taps were flowing in very smelly and colored water.
"Machakos people in Mjini, Serena and Eastleigh areas are at a risk as their water has been contaminated and when in was reported to me I took immediate action, went to the water supplying companies and the water engineers in Machakos are working tirelessly to correct the situation," announced Mwendwa on Tuesday morning.
Mwendwa said that Machakos public health sector is hoping the situation will be corrected by end of Tuesday.
The health officer, however, asked the people in the affected regions to avoid drinking or cooking with the contaminated water before treating it.
