Residents of a slum in Athi River have accused Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua of doing nothing to cholera at bay. They claimed the Kwa Mangeli slum, located in Mavoko sub-county, has been neglected by the county government. "There is too much garbage and raw sewerage flowing everywhere. We are at a very high risk of cholera infections," a resident said, as quoted by the Star. The residents accused county government officials of not collecting garbage in the areas, despite paying taxes. "We demand services from the county government just like residents from other areas in the county,” said Philip Ochieng, a resident. With tens of cholera cases reported in Nairobi, the slum residents say they are in danger of contracting the disease. Area assistant chief Cosmas Musyoki said the disease had been reported in Mavoko. "A family of three was admitted to a hospital in Athi River town and diagnosed with the disease," the chief said, as per the Star.
