There was a traffic snarl up at the busy Nairobi-Mombasa after a section of Machakos residents protested over the lack of fire engines at the Mavoko Sub-County headquarters. Business came to a standstill for hours at the officers as residents sought to know why the fire engines were not operating, Capital FM reported.

The irate mob force police to lobby teargas canisters in a bid to restore order. The protests come after a fire razed down residential houses and business premises near Peter Mullei Supermarket. Traders were compelled to close down their shops as the protests took an ugly twist.

Speaking to the press, Athi River Deputy County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding called upon the resident to use the right channels to raise their grievances. He also said that the government will not entertain acts of hooliganism as portrayed by the residents. He further reminded the residents to stay away from the busy road during protests for the sake of their lives.

“Residents should desist from demonstrating on Mombasa Road to avoid wastage of time as a result of a traffic jam. There are sick people using the road who can lose lives during the process,” he said
