Speaking after overseeing an exercise where over 6,000 trees were planted along the Machakos-Kitui Road on Sunday, the executive said that residents have a responsibility to take care for the environment.

He observed that the unpredictable weather and climate change are as a result of environment negligence.

“I want to encourage the people of Machakos to plant trees and fight for the protection of the environment,” he said.

Mr Njakaiti further said that the future of the country is at stake if measures are not put in place to address environmental challenges.

He observed that many socio-economic challenges facing the society such as poverty, diseases and famine are all as a result of failing to protect the environment.

Njakaiti asked the youth to champion for environmental conservation and think of ideas that will promote sustainability of environment.

He further revealed that the county government has set aside enough funds to implement various environmental policies adding that plans to plant more trees, clean the markets and ensure a greener environment are underway.
