A spot check conducted by this writer revealed that most of the schools and other learning institutions were using their own colors on their buses and school vans.

"We are worried that most of the schools from Machakos County and to extension entire Ukambani region may not meet the deadline issued by the former acting Education CS Fred Matiang'i of painting all their buses yellow, we urge the government to extend the deadline to enable all the schools comply with the directive, "said Samuel Wanyonyi, a teacher from a private school.

Wanyonyi said it's expensive for the schools to paint their buses yellow as directed by Matiangi, especially those schools with many vehicles.

He said each bus is approximated to cost between Sh150,000 and Sh500,000 to paint.

Star Sheikh Academy in Athi River, Machakos County are among the few schools that have complied with the order, the private school has all its fleet of more than 50 buses and vans painted yellow.

Wanyonyi, however, noted that management of the schools were willing to paint their buses but lack adequate resources.

He said the government should consider supporting private institutions which are unable to raise funds for the initiative.

"Let the government support private institutions which do not have enough resources to paint their vehicles yellow, " Wanyonyi said.
