Free textbooks being distributed by the government are yet to reach schools in Machakos County.

The county director of education Samuel Boto said Machakos schools were still waiting for the textbooks and he was hopeful the process would be completed Saturday or early next week.

Boto who was addressing the press at his office in Machakos town on Friday said, “In Machakos we have not received any textbooks so far. However, we expect Postal Cooperation which is mandated to supply the books will have done so by tomorrow (Saturday) or early Monday next week."

He said students across the county will have to wait for some time before receiving textbooks.

The National Treasury had released Sh7.5 billion to cater for the supply of textbooks to all students joining Form One this year.

Each student is supposed to receive six textbooks for the core subjects including English, Mathematics, Kiswahili and the three Sciences.

Meanwhile, Kola Sub-County has received its first education officer since it was carved out of the larger Machakos Central sub-county.

Eunice N. Muirira who reported to her new office on December 28 last year will be the first officer to oversee education matters in the new sub-county at a time academic standards in the county are at their lowest.
