Women from Machakos County have been urged to seek cancer screening in a bid to reducing maternal mortality rates in the county.
Addressing the public in Matungulu sub-county on Wednesday, the county's first lady Lillian Nganga, said the disease is still a major threat to the government's war against maternal mortality in the country.
“I call on all women from Machakos County to visit public health facilities across the county for cancer screening in spite of their ages. Cancer is a killer," said Nganga.
Nganga said pregnant women should ensure they get pregnancy tests for a minimum of four times before giving birth to avoid losing mothers during conception.
She said the county government is upgrading the Machakos Level Five Hospital to enable it to effectively and efficiently address maternal health in its entirety at low costs and without any hitches.
Nganga urged the women to make it their personal responsibilities to ensure they sought medical services and checkups early to avoid complications whenever they fall sick.
She said women should join hands in working together in development projects as a way of improving their living standards, alongside ensuring better livelihoods in the communities from which they come from.
Nganga cautioned the women against engaging in activities that do not promote their socioeconomic growth and development and instead encouraged them to develop the culture of working hard.
