More than 100 youth from Machakos county who were employed by the county government in a water mapping task are now demanding for their salaries after completing the job last month.
In March governor Alfred Mutua launched the Machakos County Comprehensive Water and Food Security Programme which he said is to help eradicate poverty in the county.
In the project the complaining youth were deployed for two days in the county to generate data that will facilitate quantifying of materials required to connect households to piped water.
The youths are now suspecting that their wages might have been paid to different people for they have been having difficulty time with county govt officials who were to pay them after the completion of the job.
"Today you will find your name in the systems, the next time you come you will not find your name”, “Today you come to rectify your number, next time you find your number is wrong, why is it that our phone numbers change while our ID numbers remain the same?!” said some of the youths who feared that somebody was tempering with the information they gave out to the county officials for payment.
Either water minister in Machakos county Engineer Francis Wambua has confirmed that the problem has been solved and assured the workers that they will be paid “We have paid very many people in the Water mapping project, very few are remaining and I assure the remaining that we will pay them.”
