As Kenya marked the 55th year since Madaraka, Mombasa Deputy Governor Dr William Kingi joined Governor Hassan Joho and the citizens of Mombasa in celebrating the hardiness and resilience Kenyans have shown since independence.
In the face of adversity, Kingi said Kenyans have exhibited commendable resilience.
Below is a summary of his speech.
"As we celebrate the progress we have made as a nation since attainment of self rule we also have to take a bold step in rededicating ourselves to the course of this nation, to the promise and vision of the founding fathers who dared to dream of a more united and prosperous country.
As a country we must re examine our national values and kill any form of distraction that would openly lead us away from this noble vision of the founding fathers.
To this end every citizen must support H.E Raila Odinga and H.E Uhuru Kenyatta in their joint effort of getting the country back on course.
On this day in a special way we also celebrate the patriotic Kenyans, laboring heroically to make Kenya a progressive nation.
We also appreciate the kindness of H.E Ali Hassan Joho who on this day opted to spread hope and smiles to the faces of antenatal mothers who have been detained in all county run hospitals through the decree he made as a Madaraka day gift to our mothers, for their immediate release from such facilities."
