Kenya Railways service has finally launched the new fare charges on its passengers.

On May 1st, 2018, passengers on second class/economy class started paying Sh1,000 from Mombasa to Nairobi. The same amount is being charged to those moving the other way round, Nairobi to Mombasa. Children between 3-11 years using this class are now paying Sh500.

Before, Kenya Railways service had suggested the fare to be increased from Sh700 to Sh1200, a suggestion that was declined by the Ministry of Transport.

First class, commonly referred to as VIP class, has remained unchanged. They are still paying Sh3,000 to move between the two cities. Children above 3 years and bellow 11 are paying Sh1,500.

The Madaraka express train has also increased its fare on the inter-county train. Those passengers travelling from Nairobi to Mtito Andei are now paying Sh490 on a second class train and Sh1490 on a VIP train.

Those moving from Mombasa to Mtito Andei are now paying Sh500 on second class and  Sh1520 on VIP train.

Kenya Railways service has kept time unchanged for both the express train and inter-county train.

The express train has maintained its departure time to be 2:30 pm while inter-county is now departing at 8:00 am on daily.
