The Thika traders on Tuesday resumed their operations in Madaraka market after the weekend inferno incident where the market was completely burnt down. The operators seem to have calm down after uniting with their local leaders on Monday in a clean-up exercise where they cleaned up all the mess left after the fire.

Meanwhile governor William Kabogo has revealed that he has partnered with World Bank to rebuild the market and other markets in Kiambu county at a cost of Kshs. 800 million.

Kabogo, speaking from Ruiru on Tuesday, said that he is aware of those that are involved in taking over the market refuting claims that the county government was involved in the burning of the market.

He said that the claims are only political and from his rivals but assured the traders that his government is concerned about them as they have been giving the government good money in terms of revenue from levies and licenses.

He added that the market will be rebuilt in 3 weeks according to the World Bank agreement and that the traders must give room for the same; a move that the traders however allege is aimed at snatching the piece of land from them and that they won’t move out.
