Angry residents of Madogo, Tana River County on Monday protested demanding land occupied by NYS be reverted to the community.
The protesters claimed that the land was allocated to NYS in the 1980’s by the Tana River county council as transit camp during the construction of the Nairobi - Garissa road.
Led by the area MCA Abdi Ergamso, they issued a 7 day ultimatum to NYS top officials to surrender the land failure to which they will hold demonstrations every Sunday until NYS surrenders the land.
According to Ergamso, the land was allocated to women traders for a modern market to be constructed by Tana River county government.
“In the previous county government, Sh100 million was set aside to construct a market but the NYS refused to vacate the land,” Ergamso said.
He said NYS has 7 days to vacate the land.
“County council of Tana River was the custodian of the piece of land allocated and women traders of Madogo where allocated the land for the consturction of the market. NYS should vacate the land within 7 days,” he added.
Maendeleo ya wanawake chairperson Fatuma Kilas said the community is ready to offer NYS a different piece of land in the outskirts of the town so that the contractor starts constructing the market.
She said traders want a modern market to operate their businesses and NYS should honorably vacate the land to allow the market to be constructed.
