More than 580 residents of Maela area, in Naivasha Sub-county are now appealing to the government to ensure that it intervenes to help them resolve a disputed land.
The members of the Ng'ati farmers’ co-operative society say that they bought the land even before independence.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Peter Njoroge, the Sacco coordinator said that the farmers bought the 18,000 acres in 1964 from an Italian farmer who went ahead and issued them with a share certificate since they bought it as a company.
“We are now appealing to the lands CS Charity Ngilu and also the National Lands Commission to come and intervene on our behalf. Most of our members are now very old, and others are already dead. Their children are the ones pursuing the issue now,” said Njoroge.
Kuria Kimani another member noted that before June 1964, each member had contributed Sh2,060 in order to buy the land.
“It was former MP Fred Kubai who assisted us to pay the balance. Our members had never enjoyed the fruit of their sweat since they started searching for title deeds and up to now they have never received it,” said Kimani.
