Health Cabinet Secretary Cleophas Mailu has accepted the claims that funds allocated for free maternity were used to pay for medical supplies and companies that service the ministry.
"It is a fact that as a ministry we used funds allocated for maternity to pay medical supplies," said the CS said during a press briefing.
Mailu further acknowledged the importance of maternity services and said that their action was justified.
"I know as a minister that the issues of free maternity are key and using the money for other purposes of course has to raise eyebrows among the public," he said.
"But equally the medical supplies support the same patients," he added.
The CS also said that the figures of the money from the maternity kitty was not ksh889 million as was reported but was ksh586 million.
