The electoral agency commissioners through consensus elected Maina during their first meeting on Monday.

Chairman Wafula Chebukati while congratulating his deputy said this was in line with the requirements of Article 250 (10) and (11) of the IEBC Act.

"On behalf of the commission, I wish to congratulate Commissioner Maina on her election and look forward to working together for the successful delivery of our mandate," Chebukati said.

The electoral body chairman urged Kenyans to support the newly constituted commission as they prepare to deliver credible August 8 general elections.

"We call upon all Kenyans to continue supporting us as we all prepare for credible and peaceful elections on August 8, 2017," he added.

Chebukati and his team of six commissioners replaced Issack Hassan and his team of commissioners who resigned in October 2016.

They took oath of office at the Supreme Court on Friday in a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice David Maraga.
