Nakuru County has this year suffered low maize yields compared to the previous years, according to area leader.
Speaking on Thursday in Njoro town during the Relief Food Programme Launch, Lare Deputy sub-county commissioner Dolphin Wanzale said that more than 10 villages in Lari Ward have been affected.
“The maize production was hampered by the deadly and very lethal necrosis disease. As we start giving out relief food, we would like to encourage all the farmers to diversify their farming and eating habits instead of relying on one type of crop,” said Wanzale.
Wanzale confirmed that the maize production in Nakuru County has decreased by a great margin.
“This is very worrying and something needs to be done immediately,” said Wanzale.
Wanzale added that the county was working with the Agriculture Ministry to educate the farmers on growing drought resistant crops.
“Soon, you will see visitors coming to each village and having workshops with the farmers. The main aim of such workshops will be to educate the farmers on different farming techniques, whereby the farmers will be taught on draught resistance farming,” added Wanzale.
