Maize production in Uasin Gishu county is expected to drop by over 30 per cent compared to what was harvested last year.

Uasin Gishu Agriculture Executive Cyril Cheruiyot says the drop is as a result of drought and the army worms invasion.

Cheruiyot said at least 1.4 million bags of maize were destroyed by the army worms that damaged crops throughout in the county.

"The rains were not reliable in most areas and farmers have already indicated heavy losses as they begin to harvest maize," noted the CeC as quoted by The Star.

Moiben sub county was largely affected by the prolonged drought and the army worms invasion.

Maize production is also expected to drop in Nandi and Trans Nzoia counties which together with Uasin Gishu are considered the county's grain basket.

Trans Nzoia's maize harvest is expected to decline by an estimated 1.3 million bags and Nandi's by 700,000 bags.

Elgeyo Marakwet, Bomet, Nakuru and Kericho are also expected to harvest less maize.
