A major political battle is looming in Kisumu County, the epicenter of Nyanza politics, if the latest happenings are anything to go by.
In this week alone, two major events which may have a bearing on 2022 politics happened.
First, there was the sacking of Patrick Ouya as Chief of Staff following the drama that ensued at the Governor's Office where he allegedly threatened to kill Prof Anyang Nyong'o. The sacked Ouya hails from Nyando, Senator Fred Outa's home constituency and is said to be the Senator's right hand man.
Then there was the Court of Appeal ruling that upheld a High Court ruling that Prof Nyong'o was validly elected following an appeal by his predecessor Jack Ranguma.
The events are no doubt going to give momentum to the 2022 gubernatorial contest which is promising to be a mother of all battles.
Already Prof Nyong'o and Senator Fred Outa are headed for a face off with the Senator recently warning the County boss of "dire consequences" as reported by the Standard. Their 'Team Kali' that carried the day in 2017 is literally transforming into a bitter lemon. Where will it end?
Outa has in the past claimed that he is Prof Nyongo's heir apparent. Is he going to challenge the Governor in 2022? Time will tell.
What of Ranguma? With his political life hanging on balance after that Court of Appeal ruling, we will he go back to the drawing board and rebrand himself, and emerge stronger and face Nyong'o in 2022? Most likely yes.
With Nyong'o, Outa and Ranguma most likely to battle it out for Kisumu governorship in 2022, political fireworks are expected. And on this, the smart operator will carry the day.
