Supreme Court sitting during 2017 presidential election petition. [Photo|Twitter]President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration has dealt the Supreme Court of Kenya a major blow, days after it nullified his August 8, reelection. This is after the administration ordered for the immediate closure and subsequent freezing of bank accounts operated by the International Development Law Organisation (IDLO).The organisation has been funding not only the Supreme Court, but the Judiciary as an arm of government, for the past eight years, and the order deals a major blow to the Chief Justice David Maraga-led system. In a letter dated October 5, 2017 addressed to IDLO Director General, Irene Khan, NGO Coordination Board Executive Director, Fazul Mohammed, said IDLO has been receiving funds for charitable activities but have been being diverted to other operations.Fazul also directed the organisation to seek legal certification to work in the country and further asked the Central Bank of Kenya to withhold all IDLO funds until further notice.Scholar Prof Makau Mutua, one of Jubilee government's critic, serves at the organisation’s advisory board, as chairman. It should be remembered that Uhuru and his government were unhappy with nullification ruling, and promised to 'reform' the Judiciary.
