[Photo/Martha Karua]High Court judge Joseph Sergon has ordered Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria to pay former Justice Minister Martha Karua, Sh6.5 million for defamation. This is after Karua sued the Jubilee lawmaker for damaging her reputation by claiming that she procured witnesses in the ICC crime against humanity case against Deputy President William Ruto at The Hague following the 2007-08 post-election violence. Ruto's case was dismissed in April 2016 over insufficient evidence. The former Gichugu MP who had asked for Sh20 million as damages, argued that Kuria's statement was malicious, unwarranted and defamatory in nature. She said the words injured her character, personal credit and reputation as well as her standing as a politician, businesswoman, family woman and as a lawyer. Before the Wednesday ruling, Karua had written to Kuria in 2016 demanding for an apology within seven days or be sued for defamation, only for him to repeat the same remarks at the precincts of Parliament the following day.
