The government has had plans to close various refugee camps in Kenya and 74% of Kenyans agree with the move.
In polls conducted between 9th and 26th of January 2017 on a population of 2,057, Kenyans aged 18 and above in rural and urban areas were sampled across 41 counties and the sample error of +/-2.16% with a 95% confidence level.
43% of the respondents believe the presence of Kenyan soldiers in Somalia has increased terrorist attacks in the country while 40% of Kenyans believe KDF soldiers in Somalia under AMISOM will defeat al Shabaab. 39% say the soldiers’ presence in Somalia has not helped the situation.
46% feel despite AMISOM troops being in Somalia, there is no guarantee the country will be united and stable under the new government, while only 40% of respondents are optimistic.
57% of Kenyans believe the six years that KDF forces have been in Somalia has helped improve security in that country while 27% of the respondents feel Kenyan troops should be withdrawn from Somalia. 24%say more soldiers should be deployed to wipe out the militant group.
The views of the correspondents were divided based on their political views as noted below: Twice as many NASA supporters (40% against 20%) in Jubilee want KDF pulled out of Somalia, while twice as many of their Jubilee counterparts (31% against 16%) in NASA want the number of troops increased.
62% of Kenyans think Kenya is likely to be attacked by terror groups, the Western region being a hotspot at 80%, followed by Coast, Nyanza, Rift Valley, Eastern, Nairobi and Northeastern at 55 , and the least likely to be attacked is Central at 53 per cent.
