In his weekly newspaper column, Mutua claimed that Joho's trip was a major blow to President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

According to Mutua, the two top Jubilee leaders were behind a campaign to make the Mombasa Governor appear like a drug baron.

The columnist further alleged that the recent crackdown on the drugs, including the extradition of the Akashas was a political move meant to hurt Joho.

"After the mysterious forcible extradition – more like rendition – of the Akashas to the US on drug charges, Jubilee raised the tempo of the anti-Joho drums. Even a kindergarten knew the ground was being prepared to cut off Mr Joho at the knees," he said.

Mutua, further added that  the alleged efforts by Kenyatta and Ruto had hit a snag after Joho made a trip to the US where he met senior government officials.

"The US government wouldn’t receive a known drug dealer – especially at a time of heightened scrutiny of visitors to the US. One can only draw two conclusions from Mr Joho’s triumphant visit to the heart of Washington DC – either Mr Joho isn’t a drug dealer, or the Jubilee regime and the US have no evidence against him", Mutua stated.

In light of the seemingly warm reception the Mombasa Governor was accorded in America, Mutua stated that Jubilee would be forced to go back to the drawing board as they seek to defeat the ODM party's dominance in the coastal region.
