Kuresoi South MP Zakayos Cheruiyoit has urged Nakuru government to address challenges facing farmers to make farming more enterprising.

Speaking on Tuesday at Keringet Trading Centre during a development tour, Cheruiyoit noted that farming is the residents’ backbone, and that the county government should address their plight to improve their living standards.

He cited maize farming which he said has been a discouraging venture due to poor payment and the presence of brokers who exploit farmers by buying their produce at throw away prices.

“The county government should help maize farmers by providing them with a reliable market as well as flushing out middlemen,” said Cheruiyoit .

The legislator urged the county to utilise the Sh10 billion it set aside for agriculture to improve the sector.

“The county government should use the money to provide subsidised farm inputs to farmers,” added the lawmaker.

He further urged the local government to make use of the County Extension Agriculture Officers to encourage farmers to take part in commercial farming.

Meanwhile, Cheruyiot wants the county government to address sanitation , health sector and construction of roads to ease movement of farm produce.
