Farmers in Makongeni, Thika have been encouraged to embrace greenhouse farming as a way of increasing productivity and profitability.
Speaking in Makongeni on Monday, Kamenu MCA Mary Hussein noted that some farmers are already practising greenhouse farming and reaping good results from it.
Hussein said that the area climate had drastically changed over the years and therefore the need to embrace a modern type of farming that will ensure a regular supply of food for consumption by locals and the town's population.
"It is high time farmers in this area embraced green house farming to start enjoying the benefits of this type of farming. Change is inevitable in this such kind of unpredictable weather,” said Hussein.
The MCA further noted that the land in the area had reduced due to increasing urbanisation saying that green house farming was the solution to ensuring supply of farm products.
She urged farmers to form groups and go for funding from the county government's Biashara Fund, State's Uwezo Fund or any other low interest funding from other money-lending institutions.
