Waiguru, speaking from his Makongeni office on Tuesday, argued that some rogue hawkers have been using the opportunity to commit crime or break into people's houses.

"We have reports that some rogue hawkers have been hiding under the pretext of door-to-door and home to home business to steal from residents," said Waiguru.

He added: "We are now directing that hawkers who want to sell their merchandise to residents in rental properties to seek permission from the property owners or their caretakers from now going forward."

The chief noted that cases of burglary in the area have steadily been on the rise in the area which he partially attributed to rogue hawkers.

Waiguru said that rogue hawkers have been taking advantage of some residents absence who are either out for holidays or at work to break into their houses or steal items left outside their houses.

He said that hawkers that will contravene the directive will be dealt with accordingly and also risk being charged with trespass.
