The state of the counties report by economist Ken Gichinga has ranked Makueni county among counties with very low literacy levels. Nairobi has the highest while Garissa is the least educated county.
Nairobi county has 96.1% literate people while Garissa’s percentage is 8.2. Makueni has a 22.41% literacy level, which is relatively low.
Trans Nzoia has 27, Isiolo has 15 per cent, Turkana has 46 per cent, Isiolo 85 per cent and Wajir at 23.8. Literacy levels in Machakos and Taita Taveta counties is at 82.3 per cent and 79.1 per cent respectively. Kisumu and Kakamega counties share 83.1 per cent while Mombasa has 85.8.
72. 2 is the national average with Nyeri and Kiambu doing fairly well. Nyeri is at 91.8 while Kiambu has 95.4 per cent.
The report stated that the differences were due to differences in Education investment across counties.
Its intention was to reveal socioeconomic realities in all counties as well as assess mushrooming risks and opportunities.
