Fish farmers at Makwa in Chania Ward, Gatundu North sub county have called upon the county government of Kiambu to send them fish experts to assist them in their aquaculture farming.
The farmers who met at Makwa Shopping Centre on Wednesday said that lack of expertise in the farming had seen their fortunes dwindle and now want the county government to help them in terms of providing them with necessary expertise.
"We are a group of farmers who have come together because we all have interest in fish farming but we have one challenge, and that is lack of an expert who can guide us on how to go about this farming which is a new thing here," Samuel Mureithi, the farmers chairman said.
They say their aim is to break away from the traditional tea farming that is over-relied in the area and which is no longer fetching them enough income to cater for their day-to-day expenses.
"Tea earnings have been going down year after another and we can no longer rely on them entirely because we do not know what will happen tomorrow," said Anastasia Wamuyu, a farmer.
The farmers add that the farming had attractive earnings if only they could get experts coming to the field.
"We have visited other established fish farmers who are doing well in the field and getting good earnings. We can also do well with the necessary expertise," said Joseph Chege.
