We've all heard the myths. Male brains are more competitive and female brains are better at multitasking, or that men think about sex more often and women are bigger gossips.

Well, according to researcher Mathew Fisher this is nothing but pure hogwash. The most recent studies into the operations of the brain indicate that the brain is exactly similar across the sexes.

Cultural evolution brings the divide. The theory used to be that once a fetus developed testicles, they secreted testosterone which masculinized the brain.

If that were true, there would be two types of brain, but that is not the case.

Findings from Physicist David Deutsch of the University of Oxford suggest that we all lie along a continuum of what are traditionally viewed as male and female characteristics.

We separate girls and boys, men and women all the time. It's wrong, not just politically, but scientifically - everyone is different, and individual differences are what cause this uniqueness, not our brains.

For instance many studies have found that men report having more casual sex than women. But female sexual appetites may be underestimated because women are more likely to downplay use of pornography or masturbation, while men tend to exaggerate theirs.

We've all heard that women are better communicators, in reality, the gender differences in verbal abilities are small, and for some specific skills, men outperform women.

Some studies find that girls are better at reading, but it might only seem that way because boys are more likely to have learning difficulties.

Most of these stereotypes are just that, baseless stereotypes with little to no evidence.
