The plant which draws water from Sabaki River, is able to produce 1.2 million litres of clean water in a day that could serve approximately 80,000 people.

Currently, it is serving families displaced by floods in eight camps in Kilifi County, three in Malindi, and five in Magarini.

During the commissioning on Tuesday, Gullet said "this plant was designed in response to the flood emergency in Kilifi after the Sabaki River burst its banks and damaged the Baricho well that supplies Malindi, Kilifi and Mombasa towns."

Kilifi and Mombasa County governments are working together with the national government to ensure the wells are up and running.
