Malindi residents now wants National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to ban trucks carrying sand from passing through residential areas for causing sound pollution, dust and disturbing their peace.
The residents say the trucks from Kibokoni area in Magarini normally use the residential area route to evade tax at the Kilifi county weigh bridge in Kwandomo.
Residents majority of them foreigners who live along the Kibokoni route said there are over 40 trucks that ply the route both day and night which pose a major threat to their health as they leave out dust in their homes.
They said effort to stop the menace has proved successful through the relevant offices of the county government and even the security personnel.
Addressing the press at Woburn residence owned by Franco Esposito a Kenyan of Italian Origin they said the problem started during the Christmas festive season and has been going on to death.
“We are asking the authorities to make rules that will require the trucks use the main Malindi Lamu road,’’ he said.
Esposito alias Kasoso Baya said already some of the residents have contacted throat and lung diseases caused by dust infection.
His wife Elly Esposito is among those affected with bronchitis and is supposed to undergo medical check up in Nairobi.
Esposito said the trucks were major environmental threat and called on the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to intervene so as to stop the problem.
Adriano Ghirardello a honorary warden of Malindi and Tsavo national parks who is also a resident of the area asked Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi to mintervene and bring an end to the problem.
He said it was strange that they were suffering and every government office was neglecting them .
“The problem is affecting our health, after every five minutes the trucks bring big cloud of dust which goes into the houses , its difficult to survive in such an environment,’’ he said.
Other residents who operate villas and restaurants along the way claim it is impossible for their clients to eat outside at the swimming pool due to the dust.
