Kitui governor Julius Malombe has picked trade unionist Agnes Kambua as his running mate ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

Kambua has been serving as Kyuso Knut branch executive secretary.

The governor has since dropped his current Deputy Governor Peninah Malonza with whom he has had a frosty working relationship with.

The picking of Kambua in Malonza's place has largely been viewed as an attempt by Malombe to bolster his grassroot support as elections day draw nigh.

Speaking on Monday shortly after the unveiling of his running mate, Malombe said he had settled on Kambua after "careful consideration and wide consultations."

Malonza was poached by governorship hopeful senator David Musila, who is eyeing to unseat Malombe as an independent candidate.

Musila lost the Wiper Party ticket to Malombe during the primaries.

Also eyeing the seat is former Lands CS Charity Ngilu, who is vying on a Narc ticket.
