Mrs Kibaki died on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at a London hospital.

On her Facebook page, the speaker condoled the family of former president Mwai Kibaki stating that Mama Lucy was a staunch defender of women rights and their empowerment for the good of the country and future generation.

“I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt deepest condolences to the family of His Excellency former president Mwai Kibaki, friends of the family and all Kenyans at large. The late Lucy was a strong woman leader who worked tirelessly to empower Kenyan women and the entire nation through many generations. In her death, we should ensure that these values she held close continue to be advanced,” she posted.

Kenyans from both political divides have eulogised the former first lady, lauding her for standing behind the country even during very difficult moments like 2007-8 post-election violence.

Mama Lucy will be remembered due to her temperamental nature in fighting what she would call “irresponsible journalism”.

At one point, she stormed Nation Media Group on Kimathi Street in 2005 demanding the arrest of a journalist who had allegedly published a lie tarnishing her name.
