A 40-year-old man has been found dead in a bar and restaurant after allegedly checking in with a prostitute over the night in Thika town.
Witnesses say that John Kamau was with a middle-aged woman before renting a room in Old Twiga bar and restaurant and was found dead in the morning by the supervisor.
According to Mary Wangari, the supervisor of the restaurant, the deceased was in the company of an alleged sex worker in the restaurant until late hours when they decided to book a room to spend the night.
Wangari said that at around 1.00am, she found the door to the room of the deceased wide open and on checking on him he found the man lifeless on the bed.
She said that she immediately contacted the area police about the incident who arrived at the scene to probe the circumstances that led to a mysterious death.
“I contacted the authority the moment I found him dead and they responded quickly to the incident,” said Wangari.
Ernest Njire, the bar manager said that the woman is suspected to have fled in the middle of the night after stealing from the deceased, who had no wallet or money with him.
Shadrack Maithya, Thika West OCPD, said they are launching a crackdown in the area since at least three people have been reported dead in the facility in the past.
However, Njire has denied allegations that three people have died in the lodging, claiming that those spreading the reports are hoping to tarnish his business.
He said that the deceased was not a regular client of the restaurant but the lady is a commercial sex worker in the area.
The police boss confirmed that no visible injuries were seen and has ordered the closure of the restaurant until investigations are cleared.
The body was taken to Thika Level 5 for post-mortem examination.
