A man and his grandson died when their house caught fire yesterday.

The old man and his one year old grandson burned to death after a lantern that they used to light allegedly burst open and lit the curtain spreading to the rest of the house.

Confirming the incident the area chief Willington Ndawa condemned people who leave their old parents and relatives to take care of themselves stating it was irresponsible and heartless.

“I was alerted by neighbors who saw the fire but it was too late to rescue the old man and his grandson as they had already been burnt completely. Old people are important in our society and should not be abandoned instead other people ought to be around them,” said Ndawa

Joseph Ngeana, a grandson to the diseased sated that he had visited the relatives an hour earlier at around 6 PM and had lit the karoboi (lantern) for the two in preparation for the night as it was getting dark.

“I passed through my grandfathers’ home at 6 PM and left after I lit the lamp for the two as I always do every day. Later I heard neighbors screaming and rushed out only to see their house on fire,” said Ngeana

Matungulu OCPD Joseph Chesire speaking after the incident warned the area residents to avoid leaving lights, lamps or candles on at night as they go to sleep to avoid fires.

Chesire further stated that the bodies of the two have been taken to Kangundo Hospital mortuary by police officers from Tala police post.
