A man has been arraigned in a Machakos Law Courts for stealing food after he broke into a shop in Machakos County.
Philip Kyalo appeared before Resident Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe at Kithimani Law Courts on Friday and charged with burglary.
According to the prosecution, Kyalo broke into the shop on Wednesday and stole food items.
Prosecution, however, argued that the defendant's motive was not only to steal food as he was hungry because some non-food items were also stolen from the business premise belonging to Consolata Kioko.
Ms Kioko told the court that she lost goods valued at over Sh40,000.
She denounced the accused's argument that his motive was to get food for his family.
"It can't be that he stole because he was hungry because some non-food items including soap and cooking utensils were also stolen," Kioko said.
Earlier on, Kyalo had told Resident Magistrate Shikwe: "My mother is too old to work and fend for herself. Because I do not get enough time to be at home, I decided to get her some food because I was to travel."
Kioko admitted the offense but requested court to be lenient to him as his aging grandmother needs his help since no other relative lives with her.
He was released on Sh100,000 bond.
The case was slated for hearing on April 25, 2018.
